Atlanta's First Mobile Feline Spay-Neuter Practice Project CatSnip ™ is Metro Atlanta's first and only mobile surgical unit specializing in spays and neuters for cats. Project CatSnip™ plans to lower feline overpopulation in Atlanta by making spay and neuter surgery affordable and accessible for cat caretakers, mainly those who are financially struggling. Cats are remarkably fertile. For every human born, 15 dogs are born and 45 cats. One female cat and her offspring can be responsible for producing 420,000 kittens in 7 years. CatSnip™ will provide the means to stop the reproductive cycle and decrease hardships on outdoor, homeless cats.It is estimated there are more than 950,000 owned cats in metro Atlanta. An additional 300,000 to 600,000 stray and feral cats struggle to survive on their own outdoors. Most of these cats are not altered, receive no Rabies vaccines or health care. They reproduce at will and many suffer from illness or injury before dying at an early age. Tens-of-thousands of cats and kittens are destroyed annually in area shelters. On average, about 8 out of every 10 cats that enter a metro Atlanta shelter are euthanized. These brutal truths are the reason why the Atlanta Animal Alliance launched Project CatSnip. Sterilization is a humane, non-lethal method for reducing cat populations. Project CatSnip ™ specializes in feline spay/neuter surgeries only. Quality surgeries are performed by an experienced, licensed veterinarian using protocols developed in cooperation with the University of Georgia and University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine schools. The surgical procedure, for the low price of $40 for a male or $60 for a female.Kittens can begin reproducing as early as five months of age. CatSnip ™ specializes in early age spays and neuters (8 to 24 weeks), a safe procedure endorsed by the American Veterinary Medical Association to prevent unwanted litters. To make an appointment, call 770 448-6806. The Atlanta Animal Alliance launched Project CatSnip to encourage each Atlantan to help solve the areas severe pet overpopulation problem by having their pet spayed or neutered. Currently, shelter workers are forced to kill an estimated one hundred thousand homeless cats and dogs each year—that's one every 6 minutes. Taxpayers bear the cost of picking up, housing, and eventually killing these abandoned pets—as much as $125 per animal. In Fulton County alone, about 16,000 cats and dogs were killed in 2001. "The solution is simple," says Bob Christiansen, President of the Atlanta Animal Alliance. "By spaying or neutering companion animals, we can align the supply of pets with available homes, reduce the needless suffering that homeless animals endure, and save taxpayers' money at the same time." "Project CatSnip plans to alter 6,000 cats its first year of operation," he adds. |
