The Need for S/N in Atlanta

Project CatSnip is the Atlanta Animal
Alliance's first program to combat pet overpopulation through non-lethal
means in the greater metro Atlanta area.
Go to Project CatSnip
The Need in Atlanta
Over 100,000 pets are destroyed annually because they do not have
owners who are able to provide the basic care necessary for their
survival. No other disease or condition of companion animals takes as many
lives as euthanasia. In fact, no other disease comes close.
There is increasing concern about the fact that between 10% and 20% of
Atlanta area pets are destroyed annually, almost double the national rate.
Sadly, Atlanta is not meeting the challenge and achieving advancements as
well as other American cities.
Although pet overpopulation is certainly not an easy problem to correct,
those cities that have provided affordable and accessible spay/neuter to
the pet owning public have seen the sharpest decline in euthanasia rates.
Goal:
- Align the supply of animals in Atlanta with the demand by offering
affordable and accessible spay/neuters.
- Develop a system in greater Atlanta by which companion animals can
be spayed or neutered at an affordable rate.
- Collaborate with area veterinarians to establish a system that
serves pets whose owners are unable to afford full-service veterinary
care.
- In 5 years we intend to decreasing the number of homeless pets that are euthanized by 80%, from
100,000 to 20,000.
Veterinarian Alliance
The Atlanta Animal Alliance will work in cooperation with area
veterinarians. We will be part of a community alliance to welcome
veterinarians and others interested in animal welfare and resolving
overpopulation problems. Our focus is to service animals and people who
would not otherwise seek the surgical services of private practitioners.
The Atlanta Animal Alliance in effect will become an extension of
veterinary practices and extend basic spay/neuter services to individual
pet owners that could not afford it otherwise.
Description of Spay/Neuter Services
Canine and feline spays and neuters will be performed
by a licensed veterinarian assisted by a veterinary technicians and an
animal care specialist. Area veterinarians will
be used on a rotating basis.
Basic immunizations will be available to those animals
who receive s/n surgery only. They are Rabies, Distemper and Feline Leukemia
vaccinations. Services will be provided on an outpatient basis, with
animals being delivered early in the morning and retrieved in the late
afternoon. An approved, safe anesthetic protocol will be used on all
animals, along with an effective scavenging system to remove anesthetic
gases, providing a safe working atmosphere for all employees.
The AAA will provide a marketing and communication
program that will target low-income pet owners. We will also seek
government funding. organize and promote Spay Days and establish stray cat
programs (currently nonexistent in Atlanta).
